How Much Line Spacing Should a Multi-Line Headline Have?

TLDR: Set a multi-line headline’s line breaks before adjusting its leading. Start near the typeface’s default line height, tighten until the lines read as one composed unit, then restore enough room to prevent letters, accents and punctuation from creating collisions. Judge the result at its final size and on its real background. A percentage can record your decision, but it should not make the decision for you.

Good multi line headline line spacing design is not a matter of choosing 90%, 100% or 120% and moving on. The correct spacing depends on the visible letterforms, not merely the nominal font size. A compact all-caps face, a mixed-case serif and a display font with tall accents can all look radically different at the same numerical line height.

My default judgment is simple: a display headline should usually feel like one shape rather than several unrelated lines. If the gaps become the loudest element, the leading is too loose. If letters appear to crash into one another or the words become harder to separate, it is too tight. The useful setting lies between those failures, and the composition will tell you where.

Start with the typeface and the line-break shape

Do not refine leading around a temporary wrap. A changed line break creates different vertical relationships: a descender may suddenly sit above a capital, quotation marks may move to an exposed edge, or a short final line may make the whole headline feel top-heavy. Establish the wording, width and intended breaks first.

Read the headline as a silhouette. A three-line headline can form a stable rectangle, a stepped shape or a deliberately irregular rag. None is automatically correct. The shape should support the message and its position in the layout. A centered event title may benefit from a compact, balanced block; an editorial headline can tolerate a more active rag if it directs the eye into the article.

Adobe InDesign includes a Balance Ragged Lines feature intended for material such as multi-line headlines, pull quotes and centered paragraphs. It can offer a useful alternate wrap, but it does not replace editorial judgment about emphasis or phrasing. A mathematically balanced headline can still break after the wrong word.

Try two or three deliberate wraps before touching the leading. Preserve meaningful phrases, avoid isolating weak words where possible, and decide which line should carry the visual emphasis. If the wrap is poor, tighter spacing merely turns a weak composition into a more compact weak composition.

Why headline leading can be tighter than body leading

Leading is the baseline-to-baseline distance between lines of type. InDesign measures it in points, but that measurement is not the same as the white gap the eye sees between letters. Two fonts set at the same size and leading can have different cap heights, x-heights, ascenders, descenders and built-in vertical proportions. One may look airy while the other looks packed.

Body copy needs a repeatable reading rhythm across many lines. A headline has a different job: it must establish hierarchy quickly and often needs to behave as a single visual object. That is why display leading can often be tighter than body leading. Adobe likewise notes that there is no fixed formula for leading because the appropriate choice varies with the typeface, purpose and line length.

Tightening has a cost. It reduces the tolerance for awkward letter combinations, alternate language versions and responsive reflow. It can also make an already heavy typeface look like a wall. The goal is not “as tight as possible.” The goal is enough cohesion without sacrificing recognition.

Inspect the real collision points

Average white space is a poor judge because readers do not encounter an average letter. They encounter specific pairs. Look closely at the lowest glyphs on one line and the highest glyphs on the next.

  • Descenders such as those in g, j, p, q and y above tall capitals or ascenders
  • Accented capitals and lowercase letters with acute, grave, circumflex or other diacritical marks
  • Quotation marks, apostrophes, currency marks and mathematical symbols
  • Italic characters whose slant pushes them into nearby space
  • Swashes or alternate characters that extend beyond an ordinary glyph box
  • Oversized punctuation at the beginning or end of a line

A collision does not always mean two shapes physically touch. A narrow gap between a descender and an accented capital can create a dark, accidental relationship that attracts more attention than the words. Conversely, two flat rows of capitals may tolerate less measured distance because their edges create a predictable channel of white space.

Inspect both the tightest local pair and the headline as a whole. Do not open every line dramatically to solve one troublesome pair if a small line-break change, alternate glyph or wording adjustment would produce a cleaner result.

Adjust leading only after the breaks are final

Create three versions side by side: deliberately loose, deliberately tight and a middle candidate. This comparison is more revealing than nudging one version for several minutes, because the eye quickly adapts to whatever it has been staring at.

  1. Set the typeface, weight, case, width and line breaks.
  2. Begin with the application’s default or automatic line height as a neutral reference, not an answer.
  3. Tighten the lines until the headline clearly becomes one visual unit.
  4. Continue briefly until the setting looks obviously cramped. This identifies the lower boundary.
  5. Move back toward more space until collisions and dark knots stop competing with the words.
  6. Compare the result with the deliberately loose version, then check its relationship to the deck, image, margin and other nearby elements.
  7. Save the chosen value in the relevant text style so the decision is applied consistently.

Figma permits fixed pixel and percentage line-height values, while Auto uses the selected font’s default line height. Because that default varies by typeface, changing fonts can change the result even when the interface still says Auto. InDesign treats leading as a character-level attribute, and the largest leading value applied within a line determines that line’s spacing. Mixed formatting therefore deserves an extra check.

For print layouts, resist forcing a large headline onto a body-text baseline grid simply for tidiness. Baseline grids are useful for aligning text across columns and pages and are commonly based on body leading or a multiple of it. A display headline has different optical demands. Align its surrounding layout intentionally rather than making its internal spacing obey a grid that was designed for paragraphs.

Treat uppercase and mixed case as different compositions

All-caps headlines often form a clean rectangular mass. With no lowercase descenders and a relatively consistent top edge, the lines may accept tight spacing. But dense capitals also accumulate visual weight quickly. A heavy sans serif set too tightly can become an impressive brick when the brief called for language.

Mixed case creates a livelier contour. Ascenders rise, descenders fall and x-height determines how large the lowercase body appears. This irregularity can improve word recognition, but it introduces more potential collisions. A typeface with a large x-height may look fuller at the same nominal size than one with small lowercase forms, so copying a percentage between them is unreliable.

Case also changes tone. Tight uppercase can feel declarative, institutional or compressed. More open mixed case can feel conversational or editorial. Those are aesthetic judgments rather than technical rules. Choose the voice first, then use leading to make that voice legible and coherent.

Test reversed type and headlines over images

A headline that looks balanced in black on a white artboard may not survive its actual background. Reversed type can appear lighter, especially at smaller sizes or in fine weights. A photograph adds local contrast changes, texture and false edges that compete with the spaces between lines.

Test the exact treatment rather than a placeholder rectangle. Use the intended crop, color adjustment, overlay and type color. Then inspect the weakest area of contrast, not only the convenient empty patch where the first mockup happened to land.

When an over-image headline feels muddled, adding line spacing is not always the cure. The stronger change may be a quieter crop, a controlled background panel, a different alignment or a weight with clearer internal forms. Leading organizes lines; it cannot make a chaotic image stop being chaotic.

If the headline will move across responsive breakpoints, approve each important wrap. A two-line desktop headline and a four-line mobile headline are not the same composition. Preserve the intended hierarchy, but allow the line height or type size to change when the narrower shape requires it.

Keep web headlines resilient when text spacing changes

A visually tight web headline must still tolerate user-controlled text spacing. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.12 requires no loss of content or functionality when specified spacing overrides are applied, including a line height of at least 1.5 times the font size. This is a resilience test, not a rule that every headline must use 1.5 line height by default.

The practical requirement is straightforward: do not place live text inside a rigid box that clips it when line height increases. Avoid fixed heights, hidden overflow and overlapping elements that assume one exact wrap. The W3C guidance on text spacing explains the override conditions and their purpose.

This distinction matters because accessibility and aesthetic judgment answer different questions. You may choose compact leading for hierarchy, but the implementation must remain functional when a reader’s settings alter that spacing.

Approve the headline at final output size

Zoom is a persuasive liar. At 300%, every gap looks enormous and every near-collision looks catastrophic. At actual poster distance, label size or mobile viewport, the same headline may read as a unified block—or collapse into grit.

For print, make a proof at final physical size, trim it if scale depends on the format, and view it at the expected encounter distance. For packaging or labels, place the proof on an object of comparable scale rather than judging a floating PDF. For screen work, inspect representative viewport widths and rendering conditions instead of approving only the design canvas.

Use a short approval check: Can the words be read in the intended order? Do the lines feel like one headline? Does any letter pair create an accidental focal point? Does the background interfere with the line gaps? Does the headline still hold its place in the hierarchy when seen at the real size?

If the answer fails, change one variable at a time. Adjust the wrap before the leading when phrase structure is the problem. Adjust the leading when the lines feel disconnected or cramped. Change the typeface, weight or background treatment when the letterforms themselves cannot carry the required composition. That disciplined iteration is a practical example of prototyping visual ideas before committing to a layout.

Set the space by what the letters are doing

The best multi-line headline spacing is neither a preset nor a typographic party trick. It is the baseline distance that makes the chosen words, typeface and line breaks behave as one deliberate shape without introducing collisions or weakening readability.

Finalize the wrap, compare loose and tight extremes, inspect the difficult glyph pairs, test the actual background and approve the design at final size. Record the resulting value in your type style only after those decisions are made. Set headline spacing by the actual letterforms and composition, not by a percentage alone.
